Dear Yoga Student,

Linda Logan October comes with cool morning air and the certainty of summer passing.  Like the squirrels in my yard, I too, am making preparations for the coming cold months and the longer hours of dark.  The sweet peppers in my vegetable garden have all turned red and need to be harvested, roasted and packed into the freezer.  The green tomatoes will be made into a spicy chutney, and I'm clearing out a section of the garage to store the new crop of potatoes, onions and winter squash.  Fall is a busy time.

In the middle of all this hubbub, I feel nature pulling back into its roots and I sense the call of the season as well.   In my asana practice I'm interested in my feet whether they are touching the earth or in the air.  I've added more standing poses to my practice, and headstand and shoulderstand are now regulars.  Though I love the excitement of handstand, deep twists and backbends, I'm called to the grounding qualities of these rooting poses.

This is also a good time of year to focus more on my personal practice.  With fewer demands from my yard I can spend more time exploring how I cultivate core strength, how my shoulders integrate to create a steady movement, and finding greater ease in my hips.   In November Lani and I will begin our series on Building A Home Practice.  One student said, "It helped me look at my goals for a personal practice, and set up a sequence that was aimed with that intention in mind."  If you have wished to begin a home practice or deepen the one you have, we hope to see there.

Happy Fall,
Linda

Dear Yogis...
Well, Fall has certainly arrived! Yesterday, I went to the bike shop to outfit my bike, myself and Piquito for our bike commutes into the studio.  Look for us with blinking lights, reflector tape and rain gear. I'm picking brussell sprouts and delicata squash from the garden.  The last of the canna lilies now compete for my awe with the butterfly maple, burning bush and Japanese stewartia.  Last week's full moon drew me out into the early mornings for hot tub soaking, star gazing and watching the sky turn to dawn.

My personal practice continues to reflect a return to my energetic roots and the harnessing of the summer's vital fire as early morning asana, pranayama and meditation lit by candles creates a tremendously soulful beginning to my day. With this year's seasonal shift, I sense a personal life shift occurring.  I don't know the design of this shift, nor do I have the clearest picture of my direction.  But I have learned that if I don't draw into my roots and clear my awareness, I'm likely to miss the opportunity for such transformation.

In this regard,  I'm honored to be co-teaching a workshop with Barb Beck (Turning Transformation into Life) as whenever I teach, I'm also a student of the experience.  And as Barb and I sit down to co-create the vision, we're both getting more insight into our own life process.  If you're curious about this work, please join us for the free introductory session this Wednesday night from 5:30 - 7 pm. (See the newsletter or the brochure for more details on the schedule.)

Around the studio, improvements are still coming!  Jim Wanless and I, intrepid shoppers that we are, headed out on an expedition on Saturday in search of blinds, curtains, coats hooks, and then some, for the changing rooms, the main office, the staff room, etc.  You should see a more operable Men's Changing Room very soon!  Nicole Adami, with the help of Matt DeClerck, will be planting a Witch Hazel by the parking lot entrance.

Thank you all for your continued enthusiasm for yoga, community and our mission at amrita.

Blessings,

Sarahjoy
