Dear Yoga Student,

Sarahjoy Marsh
This morning as I was
teaching the 7 am class, I
found myself flirting with the
question, "What Makes the
Heart Sing?" Perhaps this
curiosity arises as the birds
have returned to the garden
with their early morning song; or maybe it's the Pacific
tree frogs singing out into the night from the pond in
my backyard; or the delight of being in the swell of
Spirit with the community at amrita.

Perhaps the question is the culmination of last
weekend, when I sang for hours, with Dave Stringer,
who was in town for the Yoga and Social Justice event
and the kirtan.  Though I also found myself singing,
internally, while riding my bike home in the pouring
rain.  Drenched as I was, there was a deep and playful
appreciation for being so intimate with the elements!
As I dig into the garden in my backyard, song comes to
mind again, and keeps me company as I pull the
weeds and envision where to move the now overgrown
sedum.

In a moment of stillness, while the students lay in
savasana this morning, in wafted the whisper of an
answer to my flirtation:  What makes the heart sing is
our capacity to listen engagingly to the mysteries and
resonances of each opportunity for remembering.

While listening for this resonance in the natural world
has accompanied me since I was very young, learning
to listen, deeply listen, with other human hearts has
emerged through conscious practice, through
intentional time on my yoga mat and meditation
cushion, through carefully held compassion in
conflicted situations, and by being in the company of
others who are practicing engaged listening.

It's for this that I'd like to offer my gratitude to all of
you who have co-created the amrita community.  I feel
infinitely fortunate to be included in the vibrancy of our
shared practice; and honored to continue "composing"
our mutual song.  (In this month's Director's Letter, I'm
including several updates to the 2008 Goals as well as
a coupon offer for our Summer Session.)

Muchas Gracias,

Sarahjoy

P.S.  My recommendations for your summer of yoga
include the Summer Early Morning Immersion
(June 23 - August 15) and the Breitenbush Hot Springs Retreat (August 3-6).

Sarahjoy teaches Sunday morning at 8, 10 & 11:40am,
Tuesday & Thursday mornings at 7am, Monday &
Wednesday at 10:45am, and Wednesday at 9am.

From the Director...

Well, I'll continue here on the theme of Singing,
Listening, and Gratitude. Thank you to everyone who
came out in support of the kirtan last Saturday!  With
120 people raising our voices in the studio, the vibe
lasted well into the next several days. And, we raised
$1400 for Living Yoga over the course of the two
events.  I thank you and the students and volunteers
of Living Yoga thank you as well.
