class descriptions

level 1: An introductory class for students new to yoga. We’ll focus on understanding and getting connected to the core of the body, standing poses, beginning sun salutations, and the principles of alignment.

level 2: For continuing students, this class includes a philosophical foundation about how we practice and why and deepens the practice of asana and awareness. Asana includes sun salutations, dynamic standing poses, beginning inversions, backbends and arm balances, and seated twists.

level 3: For the early morning yoga devotee! This class varies between energetic vinyasa sequences and dynamic standing poses, arm balances, independent inversions, and seated forward bends and twists. The atmosphere is inward, quiet and connected, with good doses of communal laughter.

awareness and alignment (level 1): Using yoga poses and pranayama, this class will be an investigation into the process of how we train the mind to come to awareness. We will also specifically discuss and explore anatomy and alignment. The practice of “training” the body to learn new movement patterns and to resonate in alignment internally and externally acts as a microcosm of “training” the mind to come back to awareness and to resonate with expansive insight and grounded attention. In this, there is a spontaneous ease and delight that comes to the heart.

beyond asana (level 2+): The practice of yoga encompasses much more than asana. This class will use asana as a deepening touchstone, a place to explore the inner-sight of our yoga. It will also include pranayama, meditation, chanting, and restorative yoga. Class begins with a discussion of the philosophy of the practice to help us focus and come to the greatest depth of the moment.

upside down & inside out (level 2-3): A fun exploration in inversions and meditation.

yoga "workout" (level 2+): A deepening and energetic practice for students with prior yoga experience. Through an energetic flow of poses to include beginning backbends and inversions, the class will facilitate clearing your mind and opening your heart as your weekend begins. Why not enjoy the weekend to the fullest instead of simply recovering from the week?

immersion: This year’s summer immersion will focus on integrating the Yamas and Niyamas (attitudes/ethical precepts to live by for a balanced life) into daily life, where we “practice off the mat”. These morning practices will include asana, pranayama, meditation and investigation of the yamas and niyamas.

gentle yoga: If you ’re recovering from an illness, rehabilitating from an injury or looking for an adjunct to your wellness plan, gentle therapeutic yoga will help you gain strength, flexibility, balance, and stamina. You ’ll develop greater self-awareness and learn to manage stress, both inner and outer, more effectively.

prenatal: Designed to support your changing body and emotions, prenatal yoga cultivates strength and awareness to prepare for birth and mothering through asana, breathing, and deeply relaxing restorative poses. Join as early in pregnancy as you feel ready, keep coming as long as you want! (While our pre-natal students are welcome in any of our regular classes, there are unique benefits (ie. physical, emotional, social, etc) to being in a class dedicated to pregnant women.)
